Risk factors:
- Sex: Up to one in five women will develop a bladder infection over a
lifetime.
A key reason is their anatomy. Women have a shorter urethra than men
have, which cuts down on the distance bacteria must travel to reach the
bladder.
- Anything that impedes the flow of urine (for example stones, if urine
flows
back from bladder to kidneys etc.)
- Diabetes
or other chronic illnesses
- Pregnancy
- Sexual activity
- Hypothermia
Symptoms:
- a strong persistent urge to urinate
- a burning sensation when urinating
- blood in the urine (hematuria) or strong-smelling, cloudy urine
- frequent small amounts of urine
Therapy:
- lots of hydration
- antibiotics:
> norfloxacin
> ofloxacin
> ciprofloxacin
> amoxicillin
> nitrofurantoin
> trimethoprim
> sulfamethoxazole
Symptoms should clear up within 5 days. Take the entire
course of antibiotics recommended by your doctor to ensure that the
infection is completely eradicated
Recurrent UTI’s:
- If you have recurrent UTI’s, it might be reasonable, to visit a doctor
who specializes in urinary disorders (urologist) or a doctor whose
specialty is kidneys (nephrologists) for an evaluation to determine if
urologic abnormalities may be causing the infections. For a woman with
infections related to sexual activity, a doctor may recommend taking a
single dose of antibiotic after sexual intercourse |
