The specialty of plastic surgery developed
after World War I (WWI) as surgeons developed techniques to reconstruct the severe
gunshot wounds of the face as a result of the trench warfare. The
techniques developed were enhanced and expanded over the years to
include the following areas:
Management of
- burns, including acute care and reconstruction
- head and neck cancer
- skin cancer
- deformities or enlargement of the breast
- fractures and other injuries to the face.
- birth defects involving all parts of the body
Cosmetic surgery for beautification of the
face, eyes, nose, trunk, and other body areas.
