What is Diabetes?
Diabetes mellitus (Diabetes) is a disorder,
which is caused by lack of Insulin production and results in persistent
high blood sugar levels (Hyperglycemia). There are different causes and
types of Diabetes but all with the same result: The body's inability of
efficient use of carbohydrates, we need as for daily life.
Types of Diabetes Type 1 diabetes Results from the body's failure to produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone
that allows our body's cells
to enter glucose - in other words, to supply our body with fuel.
Type 2 diabetes Results from insulin resistance, which means the body's fails to
properly use insulin. Diabetes Type 2
is the most prevalent Type.
Gestational diabetes Gestational diabetes affects only a smal percentage of all pregnant
women
Pre-diabetes Pre-diabetes means that a person's blood glucose levels are above normal
but not as high to
be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.
Causes Type 1 diabetes
Insulin is produced by
β
cells (islet cells) of the pancreas.
Patients who suffer from type 1 diabetes do have impaired
β-cells
because of an autoimmune process, what leeds to an absolute deficiency
of insulin.
Type 2 diabetes
Disease, which results from insulin
resistence with a relatively deficiency of insulin or a secretory defect
of the pancreatic cells. |
